Trailer Watch: Germany’s Delightfully Dysfunctional Oscar Pick “Toni Erdmann”

“Toni Erdmann”

“Toni Erdmann” has had critics and audiences talking since its world premiere at Cannes back in May. Those who haven’t caught Maren Ade’s acclaimed comedy on the festival circuit finally have the chance to get a taste of what everyone is raving about now that a U.S. trailer has dropped.

The film follows Winifried (Peter Simonichek) and Ines (Sandra Hüller), a father and daughter whose personalities are radically different from one another. Ines is an overworked, polished management consultant who is deeply invested in other people’s opinions of her. Her meticulously managed life is turned upside down when Winifried, a music teacher, shows up from out of town at her work for an unexpected visit. He says he plans to stay for a month. Winifried doesn’t fit neatly into the life Ines has carefully crafted for herself — the transition to having him around is anything but seamless. The relentless prankster’s affinities include decking himself out in a wig and false teeth, a nightmare for someone as easily embarrassed as Ines. Ines desperately wants to fit in, whereas Winifried demands to stand out.

As the trailer shows, this lack of common ground leads to tension and hilarity. Ines asks her father, “Do you want to ruin me or what?”

“Toni Erdmann” has been submitted for the best foreign-language film category for the 2017 Oscars by Germany, where the film was a big box office success.

Ade told Women and Hollywood that she was drawn to telling this story because she wanted to explore “the assigned roles that everybody plays in families, and … the wish to break out of that and to start from zero.” She identified tone as the biggest challenge in making “Toni Erdmann” — her goal was for the film to be “funny and sad at the same time.”

Check out the trailer to watch the daughter-father duo in action — and to see how Ines ends up going to a meeting handcuffed to Winifried.

“Toni Erdmann” opens in theaters December 25.
