Annette Bening to Be Honored at AFI Fest

Annette Bening in “The Face of Love”: IFC Films

Mike Mills’ “20th Century Women” recently premiered to rave reviews at the New York Film Festival, and much of that praise was directed towards the drama’s star, Annette Bening. The film — and Bening’s — momentum continue to rise with the news that AFI Fest 2016 will honor the “American Beauty” actress with a Tribute and Centerpiece Gala screening at the festival.

The Tribute will celebrate Bening’s storied career, which includes four Academy Award-nominated performances, and if the loud and enthusiastic buzz is any indication, she’ll score a fifth nod — and very possibly a win — for “20th Century Women.” The film will be screened at the Tribute following a conversation with the actress, who has won BAFTA, Golden Globe, and SAG awards, and received Emmy and Tony nominations for her TV and stage work in “Mrs. Harris” and “Coastal Disturbances,” respectively.

“Annette Bening is a modern-day icon of American cinema,” said Jacqueline Lyanga, AFI Fest Director. “She brings her characters to life with an emotional intelligence that is luminous and powerful. In ‘20th Century Women,’ she finds one of her richest roles yet, delivering a strong performance that anchors the film’s terrific ensemble cast.”

AFI Fest is also honoring a number of other women this year, including “Elle” star Isabelle Huppert and Hollywood trailblazers Dorothy Dandridge, Ida Lupino, and Anna May Wong.

Bening’s many film credits include “The Grifters,” “Bugsy,” “Being Julia,” “The Women,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “Ginger & Rosa,” and “The Face of Love.”

“20th Century Women” costars Elle Fanning (“Neon Demon”), Greta Gerwig (“Frances Ha”), and Billy Crudup (“Stage Beauty”). The latter two actors join Natalie Portman in “Jackie.”

AFI Fest runs from November 10 to 17 in Hollywood. “20th Century Women” opens in theaters December 25.
