Twenty-five-year-old Queen Elizabeth II “had a massive responsibility put on her at a time when she’s grieving and she’s had a terrible loss — the death of her father. And then her whole life changed,” explains Claire Foy (“Wolf Hall”) in a new featurette for Netflix’s “The Crown.” Foy plays the Queen in the upcoming series, which takes an intimate look into the private and public lives of the famed monarch.
According to the “The Crown’s” official synopsis, Elizabeth is “faced with the daunting prospect of leading the world’s most famous monarchy while forging a relationship with legendary Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill (John Lithgow),” after King George VI’s (Jared Harris, “Mad Men”) death.
The featurette includes interviews with the series’ cast and crew, as well clips from episodes. We see that, even though she is royalty, Elizabeth also has relatable problems and struggles. She has a husband (Matt Smith, “Doctor Who”) and a family, and all of the issues that go along with them are exacerbated by her role as a monarch. “Nothing you or His Royal Highness do is a private matter,” Elizabeth’s friend and foil Churchill tells her.
As we noticed in the series’ official trailer, “The Crown’s” story and conflict is eerily prescient for women today: Elizabeth finds herself torn between her personal life and her duty to Britain. The disembodied voice of her mother declares, “The fact is the crown must win. Must always win.”
Elizabeth asks, “Where does that leave me?”
We’ll have to wait until November to find out, but “The Crown’s” featurette emphasizes that being the queen isn’t as glamorous or luxurious as we’d like to think.
The series premieres on Netflix November 4. Check out “The Weight of the Crown” featurette:
