A blue tang has found herself among box office royalty — superheroes, star-crossed lovers Rose and Jack, and her old friend Nemo the clownfish. That’s right: “Finding Dory” has joined the $1 billion dollar club. According to Box Office Mojo, the Disney/Pixar film’s worldwide gross currently stands at $1,001,480,568.
The Ellen DeGeneres-voiced forgetful fish has drawn impressive numbers both at home and abroad. In the U.S., “Dory” has taken home more than $484 million, and international ticket sales exceed $516 million. It’s the highest-grossing film at the U.S. box office so far this year, and the third highest-grossing film worldwide.
Deadline reports, “Alongside ‘Toy Story 3,’ [‘Dory’] is Pixar’s second billion-dollar release as well as the Walt Disney Studios’ fourth billion-dollar release in the past 12 months and its 12th ever.”
The critically acclaimed “Finding Nemo” sequel is currently the fifth highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide. The top spot is held by “Frozen,” co-written and co-directed by Jennifer Lee. Including live-action films, “Frozen” is the ninth highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, and “Dory” the 27th.
Andrew Stanton (“WALL-E”) and Angus MacLane directed “Finding Dory,” and Victoria Strouse (“October Road”) co-wrote the script. (Strouse is working on the script for “Tinker Bell,” an upcoming live-action Disney movie starring Reese Witherspoon. The project was formerly known as “Tink.” )
“Finding Dory” hit U.S. theaters June 17 and is scheduled for DVD release November 15.
