Trailer Watch: Isabelle Huppert is Finally Free in “Things to Come”

“Things to Come”

“I met someone.” A newly released trailer for writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve’s “Things to Come” starts on a sour note: The film’s protagonist, Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert), learns that her husband is leaving her for another woman.

“Things to Come” sees Nathalie, a Philosophy professor, dealing with the aftermath of both her husband’s infidelity and the death of her mother. She’s single, her overbearing, unstable mother is gone, and her children have grown up. Nathalie is concluding one chapter of her life and beginning another. “Total freedom,” she says of her new path. “I’ve never experienced it. It’s extraordinary.”

The acclaimed drama made its world premiere at Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, where Hansen-Løve took home the Silver Bear for Best Director. “Things to Come” also screened at TIFF, and is playing at the NYFF this month. We caught the film at TIFF, and were very impressed with Huppert’s performance and the film as a whole. It’s so refreshing — and rare — to see a female-led film toplined by an actress in her 60s. And “Things to Come” makes it painfully clear how much we’re missing out on by ignoring the stories of older women.

Huppert is a two-time Best Actress winner at Cannes. She’ll be honored for her decades-long career at the upcoming 2016 AFI Fest, which kicks off November 10.

Hansen-Løve’s previous credits include “Eden,” “Goodbye First Love,” and “Father of My Children.”

“Things to Come” hits theaters December 2. Check out the trailer to watch Nathalie’s journey unfold.
