Trailer Watch: Natalie Portman Embodies “Jackie”

“Jackie”: Fox Searchlight

The new teaser for “Jackie,” starring Natalie Portman, begins with a bit of the final number from the 1960s Broadway musical “Camelot,” but is then eerily interrupted by a harsher string score, highlighting the First Lady’s sudden move from a paradise to trauma.

Fox Searchlight’s official synopsis describes the film as “a searing portrait of one of the most important and tragic moments in American history, seen through the eyes of the iconic First Lady, then Jackie Bouvier Kennedy (Portman). ‘Jackie’ places us in her world during the days immediately following her husband’s assassination. Know for her extraordinary dignity and poise, here we see a psychological portrait of the First Lady as she struggles to maintain her husband’s legacy and their world of ‘Camelot’ they created and loved so well.”

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival to great acclaim and also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Previously, we only got to see a bit of Portman’s performance in a short scene, but this teaser gives us more of her stoic portrayal and the film’s overall mood.

Portman won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2011 for her starring role in “Black Swan,” another Fox Searchlight film. “Jackie” will hit U.S. theaters on December 9, meaning Portman has a definite shot at another nomination and award.
