Trailer Watch: Cynthia Nixon Portrays Emily Dickinson’s “Quiet Passion”

“A Quiet Passion”

Prepare to see Miranda Hobbes as you’ve never seen her before. A trailer has been released for “A Quiet Passion,” featuring former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson.

While the literary legend penned over a thousand poems, a mere seven were published when she died at the age of 55 in 1886. Press materials for the film, directed by Terence Davies (“The Deep Blue Sea”), detail, “She never married, and as she got older became more and more reclusive. For Emily, the family was the universe, the universe her family. Those incredibly profound relationships are explored in ‘A Quiet Passion’ where her sharp wit and observation give us a unique insight into her life and obsessions: love and mortality.”

A voiceover kicks off the trailer: “This is my letter to the world that never wrote to me,” says Dickinson. The footage suggests that Dickinson, now considered among the finest poets of all-time, was a defiant spirit. In one scene, she refuses to kneel, and in another, she smashes a plate.

“A Quiet Passion” doesn’t have a release date yet, but the drama will screen at TIFF in September.
