Lizzy Caplan to Topline Dark Comedy “Friend of Bill”

Lizzy Caplan in “Masters of Sex”: Showtime

“Masters of Sex” star Lizzy Caplan has signed on to topline “Friend of Bill,” a dark comedy directed by Amy Rice (“By the People: The Election of Barack Obama”). The script, penned by Harper Dill, appeared on the 2011 Blacklist.

Gloria Sanchez Productions and Bron Studios are teaming up to produce the feature, Deadline reports. In addition to starring, Caplan will serve as one of the project’s producers. Production is slated to kick off in November.

“Friend of Bill” centers on a writer (Caplan) dealing with the consequences of being arrested for public intoxication. Deadline writes that she “is forced to take a sabbatical in order to kick her alcoholism,” and “chooses to do so back in the idyllic small town where she grew up, only to find solace and sobriety nearly impossible to achieve while dealing with a complicated relationship with her mother and a pair of male suitors: one of them a former teacher of hers, and the other an eccentric who also happens to volunteer at the AA meetings she secretly attends.”

Caplan received an Emmy nomination in 2013 for her portrayal of sex researcher Virginia Johnson in Showtime’s drama “Masters of Sex.” Her comedic roles include “The Night Before,” “New Girl,” “Party Down,” and “Mean Girls.” You can catch Caplan in “Now You See Me 2,” in theaters now.
