Madonna is set to return to the director’s chair. The Golden Globe winner will direct an adaptation of Michaela Deprince’s 2016 memoir “Taking Flight” for MGM, a press release has announced. Deprince co-wrote the Random House book with her mother, Elaine Deprince. Now a soloist at the Dutch National Ballet, Michaela grew up an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone. She was four when she was adopted by Elaine and moved to the United States.
Written by Camilla Blackett (“Fresh Off the Boat”), the adaptation of “Taking Flight” will depict Deprince’s unconventional journey to becoming a world-famous dancer. This isn’t the first time her story will be told on-screen. She was featured in the 2012 ballet doc “First Position.” Deprince will also be familiar to Beyoncé fans — she appeared in “Lemonade.”
When asked why she decided to write her memoir, Deprince said, “It was a therapeutic outlet and a way for me to reach out to other people. When I went to South Africa [to perform with the South African Ballet Theatre], I shared my story with a few high-school kids and realized it could really have an impact,” she explained. “It inspired me to think differently about myself — I always wanted to be a role model and to let people know that it’s OK to dream and to live for something.”
Madonna made her directorial debut with 2008’s “Filth and Wisdom.” The “Evita” star also helmed the 2011 feature “W.E.” Madonna is signed on to co-write and direct another adaptation of a book, Andrew Sean Greer’s 2013 novel “The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells.” Tentatively titled “Loved,” the pic centers on the the protagonist’s relationship with her gay twin brother. The iconic singer has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide.
“Michaela’s journey resonated with me deeply as both an artist and an activist who understands adversity,” said Madonna. “We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. I am honored to bring her story to life.”
Jonathan Glickman of MGM added, “We could not be more thrilled that Madonna will bring this remarkable story to the big screen. There is no director better suited to tell Michaela’s journey with passion and sensitivity, and we cannot wait to bring this film to audiences all around the world.”
