Adaptation of Sarah J. Maas Best-Seller “A Court of Thorns and Roses” On the Way

Sarah J. Maas’ YA fantasy novel “A Court of Thorns and Roses” is getting the big screen treatment. Deadline reports that Germany production company Constantin Film acquired the rights to the best-seller and is developing the film adaptation with Piers Tempest (“Churchill”) and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Entertainment.

The first in a series, “A Court of Thorns and Roses” centers on Feyre, who becomes caught up in the world of faeries. When the 19-year-old “kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin — one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world,” the synopsis reads.

“As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it.”

Three books in the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” have been published so far and a fourth will hit shelves May 1, so it appears that the film adaptation has franchise potential.

No word on a director or casting yet, but emerging writer-director Rachel Hirons (“Worst First Date”) has been tapped to pen the script. Hiron’s feature directorial debut, romantic comedy “A Guide to Second Date Sex,” is currently in post-production.

“I’m tremendously excited to be working with Constantin and Tempo Productions on bringing these books to life,” Maas said. “This team is so passionate about adapting Feyre’s journey for the big screen, and I can’t wait to see how everything comes together.”

“‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ contains all the ingredients of a theatrical experience,” stated producer Robert Kulzer. “We have been working hard to adapt a screenplay which captures the magic and excitement of the books and look forward to finding the right filmmaker for this ambitious project.”

Maas is also the author of the “Throne of Glass” fantasy series and “Catwoman: Soul Stealer,” about the iconic Batman villainess.
