Gay Conversion Drama “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” Acquired by FilmRise

“The Miseducation of Cameron Post”

Sundance winner “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” has found a home. FilmRise snagged North American rights to the Chloë Grace Moretz-starrer, Deadline reports. The LGBTQ coming-of-age drama marks Desiree Akhavan’s follow-up to her feature debut, “Appropriate Behavior.”

Set in the early ‘90s, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” sees Moretz playing a teen who is sent to gay conversion therapy after being caught in the back of a car with a female classmate on prom night. “In the face of intolerance and denial, Cameron meets a group of fellow sinners including the amputee stoner Jane (Sasha Lane), and her friend, the Lakota Two-Spirit, Adam (Forrest Goodluck). Together, this group of teenagers form an unlikely family and fight to survive,” the source summarizes. The film is based on Emily M. Danforth’s novel of the same name.

Written by Akhavan and Cecilia Frugiuele, the pic took home Sundance’s Dramatic Grand Jury Prize in January. The frequent collaborators are set to co-write “The Bisexual,” a Hulu series about the dating experiences of a bisexual woman. Akhavan will direct and star in the comedy.

“I want to be a part of any visibility conversation for anything I represent: the Iranian community, the bisexual community, the gay community,” Akhavan has said. “I care deeply about visibility and about the stories we tell; I don’t give a shit about telling the story we’ve seen a hundred times before. The things that I’m attracted to and want to devote my life to talking about, and starting a dialogue on, are stories of marginalized people, be it sexually or ethnically.”

No word on when to expect “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” or “The Bisexual.”
