The eminently quotable star of “Judge Judy” is entering the world of scripted television. Judy Sheindlin, arguably the U.S.’s most recognizable judge, is developing a drama series at CBS, Variety reports. “Her Honor” is inspired by Sheindlin’s own life.
Michael Chernuchin (“Law & Order,” “Chicago Justice”) is working on the pilot with Sheindlin, who will be credited as story co-writer.
“Judge Judy” is produced and distributed by CBS Television Distribution. The Manhattan-based reality courtroom drama has been on-air for twenty years. Described by Variety as “the most profitable star on television,” Sheindlin earns a salary of over $47 million a year, and is under contract with CBS through 2020.
Sheindlin has a first-look production deal with the network that sees her developing new projects via her Queen Bee Productions banner. “Hot Bench,” a reality show featuring a panel of three judges, is produced by Queen Bee. The series premiered in 2014.
Famed for her no-nonsense attitude and hilarious asides, Sheindlin seems like a natural fit for working on scripted TV.
While Sheindlin made her name in family court, she first launched her career as a corporate lawyer for a cosmetics firm. She’s written a number of books, most recently 2014’s “What Would Judy Say: Be the Hero of Your Own Story.”
