The Center for Investigative Reporting is now accepting applications for two new opportunities for women in film — one geared towards filmmakers early in their careers, and the other for more established filmmakers.
The first program is a filmmakers-in-residence program for early-career female filmmakers, offering them the opportunity to learn from “award-winning reporters and producers to hone [their] filmmaking and journalistic skills inside a dynamic and diverse newsroom.” As part of the residency, filmmakers will produce a short doc or multimedia project on a topic of their choosing.
CIR is seeking a “diverse group of filmmakers representing various points of view and filmmaking styles.”
The residency is intended to support recent graduates and women in the first five years of their careers. It will run from October 2016- August 2017, and takes place in the San Francisco Bay Area. The ten-month residency is considered a full-time position, and participants will be paid $50,000 plus benefits. Filmmakers will also “receive resources and funding to help them produce and complete their final projects.”

The second opportunity invites established women filmmakers to participate in creating a documentary series, which “will consist of five half-hour episodes to be distributed nationally in fall 2017. The selected filmmakers will receive funding to develop, produce, edit, and deliver a half-hour episode in collaboration with the team at CIR.”
“We’re looking for filmmakers to create films about women taking control, taking power, and taking chances,” writes CIR. “The stories can range from the personal to the political, from the individual to the systemic. You can dig through CIR’s story archive for inspiration or pitch an original story. Our goal is to create a body of work that can be presented as a series for distribution to a national audience, to bridge the worlds of journalistic and cinematic storytelling, and to help foster enduring connections among all the women involved.”
CIR wants to play a role in supporting films that “surprise, compel, entertain, inform, and have the potential to make an impact and spark dialogue.”
Filmmakers will receive a grant of up to $95,000 to produce their work, and will be selected on a rolling basis between now and October. CIR encourages interested parties to submit their applications early. Head here to apply.
