Boy meets girl. Girl is saving mussels from pearl poachers. Boy is a pearl poacher. Hijinks and romance commence with the aid of doofus-y friends, a strapping American rival for the girl’s affections, and the backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. Not quite Burns, but not quite “Made of Honor,” either.
Most recognizable as an actress from her roles in the “St. Trinian’s” reboot series and Lake Bell’s “In A World…,” Talulah Riley makes her directorial debut with this Scottish-themed charmer. Written, directed, and starring Riley, “Scottish Mussel” looks like the sort of movie you’d see with a gaggle of giggly girlfriends at the local cinema and re-watch later alone on a haar-ridden (foggy) day in an over-sized sweater and with a mug of something (Finnan Haddie, Drambuie-laced hot chocolate, what have you).
As it doesn’t have a U.S. release date set yet, we’re looking forward to “Scottish Mussel” hitting the states at some point and will be pairing it with Sheree Folkson’s “The Decoy Bride” for a rainy-day double feature. For you lucky UK folks, the film will be released on September 23.
