New Pilot from “Transparent” Creator Jill Soloway to Hit Amazon in August

Season 3 of “Transparent” won’t debut until sometime this fall, but you can catch a new pilot from Jill Soloway, the show’s creator, on Amazon in August.

While “Transparent” was inspired by Soloway’s experiences with her own trans parent, her new project, “I Love Dick,” is based on a controversial 1997 novel of the same name. Yahoo! News reports that the Marfa, Texas-set series centers on “Chris (played by ‘Transparent’s’ Kathryn Hahn) and Sylvere (Griffin Dunne), who arrive in Marfa when Sylvere is offered a fellowship to finish a book he’s been writing on the Holocaust. There they meet Dick (Kevin Bacon), who taunts their imaginations and upends their preconceptions about love and monogamy.”

The pilot for “I Love Dick” will be available on Amazon August 19. The number of viewers and interest the show attracts will determine if the half-hour comedy is ordered to series, but its odds seem strong given Soloway’s high profile — not to mention “I Love Dick’s” eye-catching title and interesting premise. Soloway helmed the pilot, which was written by playwright Sarah Gubbins.

“Transparent” has already made history with Amazon: the family dramedy will go down in the record books as the first show produced by a streaming service to score a Golden Globe for Best Series. The series is up for a number of Emmys this year, including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Gaby Hoffmann and Judith Light are both nominated in this category), and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Soloway). “Transparent” won five Emmy awards last year, including a directing trophy for Soloway.

Last year Soloway delivered a powerful keynote address to outgoing and incoming students of the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women, calling for nothing short of a revolution by urging female filmmakers to “storm the gates” and “FUCK SOME SHIT UP.” The “Afternoon Delight” director’s advice for budding female filmmakers was both insightful and hilarious and included a number of memorable gems such as “shoot from your pussy.”
