Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “Killing Eve” Gets Second Season Pickup Before Series Premiere

“Killing Eve”

BBC America has yet to air a single episode of “Killing Eve,” but the network is clearly expecting good things from the show: Days before its series premiere, the new thriller from “Fleabag’s” Phoebe Waller Bridge has been given a second season pickup, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

The cat-and-mouse story about an assassin (Jodie Comer, “The White Princess”) and the MI5 analyst (Sandra Oh, “Grey’s Anatomy”) tasked with bringing her to justice will premiere April 8. The first season consists of eight episodes.

“This show has the thunder of women on both sides of the chase in Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer and, importantly, behind the camera with the lavishly brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge,” said BBC America president Sarah Barnett. “The early response to ‘Killing Eve’ has been incredible — for that reason, as well as the fact that we wholeheartedly love this original, funny, thrillingly entertaining series, we are delighted to move ahead with a second season before we even premiere.”

Early reviews of the show, based on the novellas by Luke Jennings, have been decidedly positive, with The Guardian applauding Waller-Bridge’s “ability to transcend genre” with the “slickly made and mightily entertaining” show, and Collider calling it “gloriously fun.”

Waller-Bridge serves as showrunner on “Killing Eve.” She also has another TV project in the works. The “Crashing” actress and creator will exec produce “Run,” a series about exes who make a pact to disappear together should they ever text the magic word to one another — “RUN.”

“Fleabag” will return for a second season on Amazon but a premiere date hasn’t been announced yet. Waller-Bridge created, wrote, and starred in the six-episode dark comedy about a self-destructive twentysomething living in London.

You can catch Waller-Bridge in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” set to bow May 25.
