Another day in Hollywood, and yet another novice male director gets trusted to bring the latest star vehicle to the screen. Screenwriter Matt Spicer is set to make his feature-length directorial debut with “Ingrid Goes West,” featuring Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation,” “The To Do List”) and Elizabeth Olsen (“Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Godzilla”).
The dark comedy centers on “a young woman named Ingrid (Plaza) who becomes obsessed with a social media star named Taylor Sloane (Olsen) with a seemingly perfect life,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Plaza is also one of the film’s producers.
Spicer, who has directed three shorts has penned the script with David Branson Smith. According to IMDb, his other feature-length screenwriting collaborations include “Flower,” starring Zoey Deutch (currently in post-production), and the Steve Martin movie “Magic Camp,” which appears to be still in development. It was also recently announced that Spicer would work with “Flower” director Max Wrinkler on the screenplay for the hotly anticipated sequel to Disney’s “The Rocketeer,” which will star a black female lead.
As we do on a regular basis, we here at Women and Hollywood can’t help but note his appointment as another instance of a first-time male director getting the opportunity to direct a relatively high-profile feature with little experience behind him.
