Trailer Watch: An Archer Fights Sexism on the Road to the Olympics in “Ladies First”

“Ladies First”

“I want my story to inspire every girl,” says Deepika Kumari in a new trailer for “Ladies First.” The short documentary chronicles the athlete’s epic journey to the Olympics. Born in poverty in rural India, the girl dreamed of what she describes as escaping a “miserable situation.”

After finding out about archery at the age of 12, Kumari dedicated her life to the sport. “She became number one in the world in three of four years which is unheard of in archery,” we’re told in the spot. “Her talent is nothing short of a miracle.” But not everyone is rooting for her. “In our country, even those who are well-educated believe that girls cannot play sports,” Kumari explains. “In my opinion, they are crazy.” So she sets out to show them just how crazy they are.

“Ladies First” launches globally on Netflix on March 8, International Women’s Day.
