SXSW won’t kick off until March 2017, but organizers have revealed that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway will be a keynote speaker at the fest, Deadline reports.
This is great news — especially if the Emmy winner’s speech is anything like her keynote address to outgoing and incoming students of the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women last year. In it, she called for nothing short of a revolution by urging female filmmakers to “storm the gates” and “FUCK SOME SHIT UP.” The “Afternoon Delight” director’s memorable advice for budding female filmmakers included “shoot from your pussy.”
Geneticist Jennifer Doudna will also deliver a keynote. The Berkeley professor was named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2015.
Other speakers that have been announced include Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, Openwater founder Mary Lou Jepsen, Pinterest’s Candice Morgan, CEO Ingrid Vanderveldt (with Gary Vaynerchuk), and rewardStyle founder Amber Ven Box.
“Queen Sugar” co-creator Ava DuVernay delivered a keynote at SXSW 2016. The “Selma” director revealed that she was Paramount’s seventh choice to helm the Oscar-nominated biopic.
SXSW 2017 runs from March 10–19 in Austin, Texas. You can catch Soloway’s new comedy pilot, “I Love Dick,” on Amazon August 19.
