TIFF Industry Conference Announces “Visionary Women” Programming

While the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is best known for its high-profile film screenings, the festival also hosts a bustling Industry Conference where topics such distribution, marketing, and audience engagement are addressed. TIFF has revealed a glimpse of 2016’s conference, which is set to include a program titled “Visionary Women.” Industry insiders will discuss gender equity — and the lack thereof — for women in the film business.

“Visionary Women” will be international in scope. A press release from TIFF promises that national agencies and producers from Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Africa will “share their visions on strategies to provide greater access for women in film.” Caroline Suh’s documentary “The 4%: Film’s Gender Problem” will screen, and be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and a roundtable discussion with influential female executives. The film will be available to watch on TIFF’s website for a 24-hour viewing period.

“We want to use the Conference’s international platform to highlight topics that everyone is talking about,” said Kathleen Drumm, Director, TIFF Industry. She emphasized, “we want to ramp up the conversation around women’s fair and equal participation in the industry.”

Fifty-seven women-directed features played at TIFF last year, or 20 percent of the fest’s lineup. The shorts program was 45 percent female-helmed. Kerri Craddock, TIFF’s Director of Festival Programming, told Women and Hollywood, “Across the programming team, we always make a concerted effort to look for diverse voices in the program, including women. And not just in terms of women behind the camera, but also female-driven stories.”

The TIFF Industry Conference will take place September 9–15. Visit TIFF’s Industry site for more information. The film festival will run September 8–18.
