Two comic book heroines are set to team up for a new horror comedy with an enticing premise. “Deadpool’s” Brianna Hildebrand and “X-Men: Apocalypse’s” Alexandra Shipp will star in “Tragedy Girls.” The Tracking Board reports that the “story follows two death-obsessed teenage girls who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small Midwestern town into a frenzy and cement their legacy as modern horror legends.” Sounds like this could be a future cult classic.
“Tragedy Girls” will be directed by Tyler MacIntyre (“Patchwork”), who co-wrote the script with Chris Hill.
Hildebrand starred in the “First Girl I Loved,” an indie that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Shipp’s previous credits include “Straight Outta Compton,” Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” MTV’s “Awkward,” and playing the titular role in the Lifetime movie “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.” Shipp portrayed Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse,” a character made famous by Halle Berry.
“I like superhero movies, but I’ve always been an ‘X-Men’ fan,” Shipp has said. “It’s totally my thing. In the original movie, Storm was my representation of the possibilities we had. She gave black women a face. A heroic face.” We rarely see women of color offered starring roles in horror vehicles, which makes this female-centric project particularly noteworthy.
