Trailer Watch: Renee Zellweger Returns in “Bridget Jones’s Baby”

“Bridget Jones’s Baby”: Universal

We’re not gonna lie: we’ve missed Renée Zellweger, and we’ve missed her most beloved character, Bridget Jones. So we’re delighted to see a new trailer for “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” and to catch a peek of what it will be like when the iconic woman becomes a mum. And now that’s it’s 2016, Bridget’s diary seems to have moved to a tablet computer, among other modern updates.

The movie reunites Zellweger with Mr. Darcy himself, Colin Firth, and new beau Jack, played by Patrick Dempsey. “After breaking up with Mark Darcy (Firth),” the official synopsis reads, “Bridget Jones’s (Zellweger) ‘happily ever after’ hasn’t quite gone according to plan. Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job as top news producer and surround herself with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. What could possibly go wrong? Then her love life takes a turn and Bridget meets a dashing American named Jack (Dempsey), the suitor who is everything Mr. Darcy is not. In an unlikely twist she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch…she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby’s father.”

While the plot line of “who is the baby daddy” is a little Maury Povich for our tastes, it’s still enjoyable to see Zellweger step back into this character.

The film was directed by Sharon Maguire, who helmed the original “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” Emma Thompson has also joined that cast as Bridget’s doctor who finds the whole situation utterly amusing.

“Bridget Jones’s Baby” opens in the U.S. on September 16.
