Trailer Watch: “When the Bough Breaks” Doc Captures Postpartum Depression

“When the Bough Breaks”

Brooke Shields’ struggle with postpartum depression was documented in her 2005 memoir “Down Came the Rain.” Now, to continue her quest to raise awareness for the cause, she has executive produced a new documentary on the subject called “When the Bough Breaks.” Shields also provides narration for the doc.

Described as a feature-length documentary about postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders, “When the Bough Breaks” began when actress Tanya Newbould “experienced postpartum depression with her daughter she did not understand what was wrong with her or how to go about getting help. Tanya teamed up with Director Jamielyn Lippman to uncover this illness that affects one in five new mothers. One of the women they interviewed was Lindsay Gerszt who was currently suffering from postpartum depression. Lindsay agreed to let the cameras document her and give us an in-depth look at her path to recovery. Babies are dying, women aren’t speaking out and the signs are being missed. Together these three women take us on a journey to find answers and break the silence.”

The trailer suggests that the film explores multiple personal stories, some with heartbreaking outcomes. You’ll recognize other famous faces in the film: Carnie Wilson, of the music group Wilson Phillips, celebrity chef Aarti Sequeira, and “Real Housewives” personality Peggy Tanous were also sufferers of the disorder.

“When the Bough Breaks” is premiering at the Dances With Films Festival this week. For more details visit the fest schedule.
