A long-awaited, new big-screen adaptation of the 1970s TV series “Battlestar Galactica” is in the works at Universal with a female screenwriter. Lisa Joy, executive producer and scriptwriter for HBO’s upcoming “Westworld,” will pen the new “BSG” script, Deadline has reported.
The series follows a war between humans and the artificially intelligent Cylons. In the original series, which aired in 1978, the Cylons were invented by a far-flung alien race. But the original series ran for only one season and is viewed as a campy classic that didn’t take its dire premise seriously enough. A 2003 Syfy Channel reboot changed the story so that the Cylons were invented by humans, but eventually evolved and rebelled against their masters. After effectively destroying humanity, the survivors of 12 colonial planets escape to live on a number of space ships, the leader of which is the only surviving military ship, Galactica.
The reboot became a hit, with Time magazine featuring the sci-fi series on its list of the 100 best TV shows of all-time. “BSG” became a strong post-9/11 allegory about terrorism, war, and prejudice.
Another aspect that was revolutionary about the ’03 reboot was that it took one of the original series’ most beloved male characters, Starbuck, played by Dirk Benedict, and changed the character to a female fighter pilot. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace, played by Katee Sackhoff, became a fan favorite.
It’s not clear which version of events this new film will follow, or which version of the characters it will include. But after so much more success with the reboot, we’re hoping they keep Starbuck a woman.
Joy has previously written for “Pushing Daisies” and “Burn Notice,” and was also attached to write a female superhero film for the Spider-Man universe, though that hasn’t advanced. Three-time “Hunger Games” director Francis Lawrence is potentially directing this project.
