“Broadchurch’s” Phoebe Waller-Bridge to Write and Star in Amazon Comedy Series

Phoebe Waller-Bridge in “Crashing”

“Broadchurch” co-stars Olivia Colman (“The Night Manager”) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are reuniting: the actresses are teaming up for an Amazon Prime Video series written by Waller-Bridge. “Fleabag,” based on Waller-Bridge’s award-winning play of the same name, is described as a “poignant window into the mind of a dry-witted, sexual, angry, grief-riddled woman.” Waller-Bridge will play the London-based lead. No word on Colman’s character yet. The half-hour comedy will be available to stream in the fall.

Waller-Bridge recently wrote and starred in “Crashing,” a British comedy series about a group of misfit twenty-somethings. The first season kicked off January 2016. Season 2 has not been officially confirmed or denied.

While discussing the stage version of “Fleabag,” Waller-Bridge said, “I wanted to write about our saturated sexual generation and the impact being oversexualized has on people. [The main character is] an amalgamation of a lot of my fears with jokes on top.”

“Rarely does talent as special as Phoebe Waller-Bridge appear,” hyped Joe Lewis of Amazon. “From writing to acting, ‘Fleabag’ is as compelling as Phoebe’s talents are undeniable. We’re excited to let customers laugh, cry, and occasionally watch things get real awkward.”

Waller-Bridge, whose big-screen acting credits include “The Iron Lady” and “Man Up,” praised Amazon for being “true risk-takers” and described her “Fleabag” character as being “very close to [her] heart.”
