Variety has announced the group of women they will be honoring at their 5th annual Power of Women event, which celebrates leaders in the industry and their philanthropic work.
This year the honorees include: Nicole Kidman, Amy Pascal, Amy Poehler, Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington. Lifetime will present the event.
Variety publisher, Michelle Sobrino-Stearns released a statement about the honorees.
Variety
is proud to continue its longstanding partnership with Lifetime Networks, shining a spotlight on the high-profile women in Hollywood who have used their
platforms to make a difference. Though each brings a unique perspective, the honorees we celebrate share an understanding of the power of giving back and
do so through an array of charitable causes that have touched their hearts. The goal of Variety’s Power of Women is to galvanize the influence of
the entertainment industry to inspire their peers and fans alike to get involved and give back.
The honorees will be recognized for the following:
Nicole Kidman for her work with the United Nations’ UN Women campaign where Kidman serves as the goodwill ambassador and spokesperson for the Say No — Unite to End Violence Against Women program.
Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chair, is a supporter of Teen Line, a hotline and community outreach program that is ran by teens.
Amy Poehler works with Worldwide Orphans Foundation which transforms the lives of orphaned children around the world.
Charlize Theron founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project — which helps to keep African children safe from HIV/AIDS. She has met with South African leaders and many others to discuss the mission of the project.
Kerry Washington supports the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. She’s part of the Turnaround Arts initiative through the committee and recently adopted Savoy Elementary School in Washington D.C. where she went to visit with first lady Michelle Obama.
The Power of Women event will be held on October 4th in Beverly Hills. The event will coincide with the release of Variety’s Women’s Impact report, highlighting achievements and milestones for women in media and entertainment on October 1st.
