Are we finally getting a female director go from the indie world into a big-budget project?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, indie filmmaker Emily Carmichael will write and direct “Powerhouse,” a film based on an original story by “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will produce. The film is described as a “family action package.”
Carmichael’s writing work was featured in “Ophelia Speaks,” a best-selling anthology of feminist essays by teen girls. She also created the comic strip “Whiz Kids.” Her short film “The Hunter and the Swan Discuss Their Meeting” won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Science Fiction Fantasy Short Film Festival. She also made the animated web series “The Adventures of Ledo and Ix” and “RPG OKC,” the latter of which won the Jury Award of Best Short at the 2013 Philadelphia Film Festival. According to THR, “Her name has even surfaced as a possible contender to direct Marvel’s ‘Captain Marvel.’”
“Emily Carmichael is the next great writer-director of the kind of movies I love,” said Trevorrow. “Her ability to find warmth and humanity in genre storytelling is a superpower in itself.”
Amblin Partners president of production Holly Bario added,“We look forward to seeing Emily’s creative vision take shape with a truly original story from Colin which has all the signature qualities of an Amblin film.”
