“Wicked” Musical Coming to the Big Screen

After almost 13 years on Broadway, “Wicked” is finally set to fly on the big screen.

Universal has announced that the musical film adaptation of the hit show and book will open in theaters December 20, 2019.

Winnie Holzman (“My So-Called Life”), who wrote the book for the musical, for which she received a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award, will pen the script, in collaboration with the music and lyrics writer Stephen Schwartz. “The Reader” and “The Hours” director Stephen Daldry is set to direct. No word on the cast as of yet.

“Wicked” is an adaptation of Gregory MaGuire’s best-selling novel, which tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West from the perspective of the Witch, here named Elphaba. Maguire based the novel on the 1939 film adaptation “The Wizard of Oz,” and L. Frank Baum’s original Oz books.

The musical elaborates on the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, the Good Witch, and as a result became a feminist powerhouse and a sensation among young girls and teens. The show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won three, and launched the careers of Idina Menzel (“Frozen”) and Kristin Chenoweth (“Glee”). It was such a hit that it recouped its $14 million investment in a little over a year, and in March of this year hit the $1 billion mark.

With a December release, “Wicked” will no doubt be gunning for some awards season consideration.
