Kate Mara to Star in Drama Series Based on Nellie Bly’s “10 Days in a Mad-House”

Kate Mara in “House of Cards”: Netflix

Kate Mara has signed on to play another journalist. The “House of Cards” alumna will topline and executive produce a series based on Nellie Bly’s 1887 non-fiction book “10 Days in a Madhouse,” Deadline reports. Sarah Thorp (“Jacob’s Ladder”) is penning the drama and also serving as an EP.

Now in development, the potential series follows Bly, who is considered the first-ever female undercover journalist. “As a reporter working for Joseph Pulitzer in the 1880s, Bly feigned insanity and got herself committed to Blackwell’s Island Asylum to report on the conditions first-hand,” the source summarizes.

eOne is the studio behind the project and SVP Carolyn Newman is overseeing the series.

Mara recently earned strong reviews for her leading turn in Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s “Megan Leavey,” a portrait of a Marine and her combat dog. The actress has two films premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this month: Tali Shalom-Ezer’s “Mercy,” a romance co-starring Ellen Page, and “Chappaquiddick,” a historical drama revolving around an infamous scandal involving Senator Ted Kennedy.

“Now that I’m older, I crave working with more women,” “The Martian” star has said. “For so long, ‘feminist’ was a scary word, but the more comfortable we can be calling ourselves that, the more changes we can make.”
