Courtney Love and Joey King to Star in Deborah Chow’s “The Possibility of Fireflies”

Joey King in “The Dark Knight Rises”

More Cannes news comes pouring in every day. It’s been announced that Courtney Love, lead singer of the band Hole and actress in “The People Vs. Larry Flint,” and Joey King (“Ramona and Beezus”) will star in “The Possibility of Fireflies,” with Deborah Chow (“The High Cost of Living”) directing from a screenplay written by Dominique Paul, author of the original novel.

According to the project’s official synopsis, “The Possibility of Fireflies” is a “coming-of-age story that takes place during the summer of 1989 in suburban Maryland. It follows Ellie Roma (King) — a precocious teenager with dreams of becoming a writer — who must cope with her chaotic, self-destructive mother Susanna (Love) and a volatile metal-head sister, Gwen. When Ellie falls in love with her older neighbor, aspiring singer Leo, she finds herself caught in the alluring undertow of a reckless rock n’ roll freedom, and must make a decision that will change her life for ever.”

At Cannes, Epic Pictures Group acquired international sales rights to ARC49 Entertainment’s Film. UTA will handle domestic rights.

“We’re so thrilled to secure such an incredibly talented duo in Joey King and Courtney Love to lead this cast,” commented Chow. “Joey has proven herself to be one of the most talented young actresses working today, and as an iconic rock musician, who is also a versatile and fearless actress, Courtney is the perfect fit for this music-infused story.”

Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald added “As soon as we read Dominique Paul’s script and novel, we fell in love with this story.”

Chow previously wrote and directed the indie hit “The High Cost of Living,” which won the award for Best Canadian First Feature at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. Chow has also directed episodes of television series “Mr. Robot,” “Fear the Walking Dead,” and “Reign.”

King also stars in the upcoming “Independence Day: Resurgence,” opening this summer.
