Here’s some great news.
Women and Hollywood has received a grant to help grow our work. For all of you who read the site regularly, you know that the goal of the work of Women and Hollywood is more than just putting words onto the screen, it’s about making change. I’ve spent the last couple of years building the brand and making strategic partnerships to help keep the brand — and me — afloat because the bottom line folks in case you didn’t know it, my type of blogging does not pay the bills. Nor does it pay for a writer to work with me.
I am very lucky.
This whole blogging adventure could have been a huge disaster. But I started at the right time, developed a following and grew the brand. Being a part of Indiewire for the last two years has been huge. It’s given the blog credibility and also some revenue. But all the revenue is based on how many people read the site and page views, and also the time of the year (Oscar season is big, spring is slow.) I am not complaining in the least, I get to do what I love and I have figured out how to make a living at it, mostly through those outside partnerships like The Athena Film Festival. Five years ago I never would have dreamed that I would have co-founded a film festival. It has become one of the most important pieces of my work. And I have to say working on it is awesome.
I am writing this because it is important to share the realities of this business, and this is me being transparent, because I want people to understand all the hours and the complexities that go into making this happen. What I have also learned in this process is that I am very entrepreneurial. I am a success because I keep coming up with new ideas all the while pushing forward the mission which all about normalizing women’s voices in all areas of the entertainment business.
One of those ideas was to publish a book. We have so much content that people don’t see so I wanted to unearth the interviews I had done with women directors and bring them back into the light. That was how the idea for In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing was born.
So now, it’s time to go to the next step. You can’t do all the work to self-publish a book and then just let it go. The objective is to get the word out, and it is also time begin to work on Volume 2.
All this is to say that I have a couple of gigs available at Women and Hollywood. One is an outreach consultant to work on getting the word out on Volume 1of In Her Voice, and one is an editorial assistant to begin the work on Volume 2 of In Her Voice. Both are paid positions. Job descriptions are below. Send emails and resumes to melissa@womenandhollywood.com. Post questions in the comments section on the blog.
