Women Make Movies Up for $1,000,000 Prize from American Giving Awards

nullWomen Make Movies, an incredible New York based non-profit that supports and distributes women directed documentaries from around the world, is one of the 25 finalists for the 2012 American Giving Awards.

They have an opportunity to win a $1,000,000 prize.  Imagine how many more women directed docs they could distribute if they had that money?

Women Make Movies started out as a feminist film collective and is now the largest distributor of women’s films in the world. And their Production Assistance program has helped hundreds of women filmmakers to raise money to fund their projects. In their 40th anniversary year, Women Make Movies continue “to assist women filmmakers in bringing their visions to the screen; to showcase global women’s perspectives to audiences; and to work with international cultural institutions to feature feminist films in their programming.”

Executive director Debbie Zimmerman stresses the importance of getting women’s films seen.

We want to get our films to audiences around the world through a sustainable digital platform and to empower a future generation of women filmmakers. The films we distribute films are on the most important human rights issues facing women today, ones that are often neglected by the mainstream media.  We believe that more films by women will equal more progress and positive social change for all.
