We’ve all long suspected that reality dating shows like “The Bachelor” wallow in sexism and manipulation. But Lifetime’s scripted series “UnREAL” came along last summer and proved our theories correct.
Created by Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, inspired by Shapiro’s time spent working on “The Bachelor,” “UnREAL” exposes the farce behind the rose. What made “UnREAL” an instant hit was its excellent female characters who just about define the television anti-heroine. We can’t help but root for Shiri Appleby’s Rachel and Constance Zimmer’s Quinn, even if what they’re up to is absolutely horrible. Watch the trailer for Season 2 below:

In these three additional clips released by Lifetime, we can see exactly how the manipulation of footage comes into play to create characters that fit a series narrative. Watch how Chantal’s lovely speech about a rose is twisted into “I will cut you.” Watch how sweet Tiffany is turned into a gold digger. Marvel at how Yael’s feminist statement is transformed to make her another catty “bitch.” All of these moves make for more drama, more infighting, and more great TV on “Everlasting” — and on “UnREAL.” (We can’t say the same for “The Bachelor.”)
Season 2 of “UnREAL” begins on Lifetime on June 6. Season 1 is now on Hulu. Check out the teasers below:
