“The Crown” Season 2 Has a Premiere Date and Teaser

“The Crown”: Netflix

Netflix has unveiled a premiere date and teaser for “The Crown’s” second season, and things are looking especially stressful for Queen Elizabeth II. “The rumors still haven’t gone away,” the Queen (Claire Foy, “Wolf Hall”) narrates, presumably referring to her husband’s infidelities. “I’ve learned more about humiliation in the past few weeks than I hoped I would in a lifetime.”

Among the monarch’s other grievances are disappointing Prime Ministers, family drama, and the continued deterioration of the British Empire. When her husband (Matt Smith, “Doctor Who”) points out that “there are some of us who are there for you no matter what,” Elizabeth scoffs and replies, “If only.”

Scheduled to return December 8, 2017, the new season of “The Crown” “bears witness to the end of the age of deference, and ushers in the revolutionary era of the 1960s,” Netflix details. In addition to Prince Philip’s shortcomings, the Queen will cope with an illegal war in Egypt and a scandal involving Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.

Philippa Lowthorpe (“Swallows and Amazons,” “Call the Midwife”) is among the directors on “The Crown’s” upcoming season.

Victoria Hamilton (“Doctor Foster”) and Vanessa Kirby (Thea Sharrock’s “Me Before You”) also star on “The Crown” as the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, respectively. The Netflix series was created by Peter Morgan, who wrote the 2006 drama “The Queen,” another story about Queen Elizabeth II.

“The Crown’s” first season garnered 10 Emmy nominations and earned Golden Globes for Best TV Actress (Foy) and Best Television Series.
