Bette Midler & Sharon Stone to Star in Film Adaptation of “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife”

Bette Midler and Sharon Stone are taking “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” to the big screen. Variety reports that the pair will star in a film adaptation of the award-winning play, which debuted on Broadway in 2000 and ran for 777 shows.

Set in the Upper West Side, the comedy centers on Marjorie (Midler), an upper middle class woman in the throes of an existential crisis. “Her loving husband, an acclaimed allergist to the homeless, tries in vain to help, but everything changes with the arrival in New York of Marjorie’s fascinating and mysterious childhood friend Lee, played by Stone,” the source summarizes. “As Lee becomes the Taubs’ permanent houseguest, Marjorie’s depression magically lifts — but Lee has a secret agenda.”

Andy Fickman (“She’s the Man”) is directing the pic.

Midler received Oscar nods for her roles in “For the Boys” and “The Rose” and won a Tony this year for her performance in “Hello, Dolly!” She previously collaborated with Fickman on 2012’s “Parental Guidance.”

Stone took home a Golden Globe for her work in “Casino,” for which she also scored an Oscar nomination. She won an Emmy for her guest spot on “The Practice.” “Mosaic,” “The Disaster Artist,” and “Mothers and Daughters” are among her recent credits.

No word on when to expect “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife,” but it’s refreshing — and still unfortunately rare — to see a film toplined by two women, and especially ones over 50.
