Alicia Vikander to Topline Adaptation of “The Marsh King’s Daughter”

Vikander in “Tomb Raider”: Warner Bros.

Alicia Vikander is expanding her ass-kicking résumé. The star of the upcoming “Tomb Raider” reboot is set to topline an adaptation of “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” a best-selling thriller from Karen Dionne. Deadline reports that Black Bear Pictures will produce and finance the pic.

Published in 2017, “The Marsh King’s Daughter” centers on Helena Petterier, a happily married mother of two who runs her own business. Lurking beneath the surface of her ideal-seeming life is a huge secret: her mother was kidnapped as a teen, and she was born in captivity. Her mother’s tormentor is her biological father, who raised Helena in a remote cabin alongside her mother until he was caught and sent to jail. When he escapes from prison and kills two guards, Helena is convinced that she’s the only one who can take him down using survival skills that he himself taught her.

Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”) penned the script. Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”) is directing.

Vikander won an Oscar for her role in “The Danish Girl” in 2016. She recently revealed that an experience with her “Seventh Son” co-star Julianne More left a major mark on her. A man in a position of power made an inappropriate, crude joke at the Swedish actress’ expense, and Moore intervened. “I was really embarrassed, and I would have just laughed it off,” she recalled. “But Julianne turned to him and said, ‘If you ever do that again, I’m walking out of here and I’m not coming back.’ She was just, like, ‘Don’t you fucking say that again.’ It showed me that she had the power. And that meant so much to me.”

You can watch Vikander’s take on Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider,” set to bow March 16. Angelina Jolie originally brought the comic book heroine to the big screen.
