Trailer Watch: Gloria Steinem Brings the Revolution to Viceland with New Docuseries ‘Woman’

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem’s new weekly docuseries has a trailer and a premiere date. “Woman” will debut on Viceland May 10.

The activist and author of “Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions” will host the series and serve as executive producer. “Woman” will highlight the work of a team of all-female journalists reporting stories about women and men who fight against gender-based violence.

“What we are talking about is a revolution,” says Steinem in the trailer. “I can tell you that by confronting the problems once marginalized as women’s issues, we can tackle the greatest dangers of the 21st century.” The spot includes footage from various episodes of the series, which will confront gender inequality across the globe.

“Polarized gender roles are the mark of terrorist groups and violent societies,” commented Steinem. “More than poverty, natural resources, religion or degree of democracy, violence against females is the most reliable predictor of whether a nation will be violent within itself or will use violence against another country — and gender violence has become so great that for the first time, there are now fewer females on earth than males. This series records on-the-ground realities and gives viewers ways to help.”

Deadline reports that episodes of “Woman” will include “reports on the impact of sexual violence in Democratic Republic of the Congo; the epidemic of femicides in El Salvador; the prevalence of sexual assault in the U.S. military; the devastating effect on American society of incarcerating mothers of young children; and a special episode produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on how the rise of extremism in Pakistan is both rooted in and reflected by violence towards women.”

The female-centic series boasts a team of female producers. Nomi Ernst Leidner, Ariel Wengroff and Amy Richards EP alongside Steinem, while Joanna Forscher co-executive produces.

If you’re in the market for another docuseries by and about women, check out EPIX’s “The 4%: Film’s Gender Problem,” directed by Caroline Suh. The series addresses the challenges faced by female directors, including building a track record, speaking up against sexism and the lack of opportunities to direct big-budget movies. Clips are now available to watch online.
