Women at the Box Office: ‘Eye in the Sky’ and ‘My Name is Doris’ Push Ahead

It’s been a good week for women-centric films at the box office.

“Eye in the Sky” and “Hello, My Name is Doris” are rising steadily in the box office, out-performing their estimated projections. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” was expected to do steadily well in its second week in theaters, and it has, with the film experiencing a respectable 37% drop in box-office earnings. The Nia Vardalos-written comedy held its third position behind “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and woman-centric “Zootopia” in the number one and number two spots, respectively. The superhero juggernaut “Batman v. Superman” lost considerable steam this weekend as it dropped about 68% at the box office.

For newbie Bleecker Street, “Eye in the Sky,” starring Helen Mirren, is proving to be a great success. By expanding to over 1,000 screens this last weekend, the film reached number nine at the box office making around $4 million and giving the young company its best single weekend ever. This is a 334% improvement over the film’s previous box office dollars, demonstrating that people will flock to see women-centric films when they have access.

“Hello, My Name is Doris” is now playing in almost 1000 theaters. The quirky Sally Field romantic comedy scored an estimated $2.3 million. According to Indiewire, these numbers suggest “there is still room for more expansion” and the film’s favorable reception in middle America is a sign of its widespread appeal.
