Freeform Orders Pilot Based on Life of Cosmo Editor Joanna Coles

If you saw “The Devil Wears Prada” and longed for more, say as a television series, you might be in luck. Freeform, the network formerly known as ABC Family, has ordered a pilot for a scripted series inspired by the life of Cosmopolitan editor Joanna Coles.

According to Variety, the series, titled “Issues,” will offer “a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine. Their struggles are about finding your identity, managing friendships and getting your heart broken, all while wearing the perfect jeans to flatter any body type.”

Sarah Watson (“Parenthood”) created “Issues” and will executive produce with Coles, David Bernad and Ruben Fleischer (“Superstore”). Holly Whidden is a co-executive producer.

In the past, Cosmopolitan has not been thought of as a go-to magazine for exploring serious women’s issues, but that’s changed in recent years. Coles has said that Cosmo has always been “deeply feminist,” explaining, “We’ve been covering issues that, oddly, I don’t think are political, but in the current climate feel political.” “And our point of view is always that women have choice and that we have the women’s back,” Coles emphasized.

Freeform just ordered “Famous in Love” to series, a new drama from “Pretty Little Liars” creator I. Marlene King. Bella Thorne (“Scream”) stars as a college student who becomes a famous actress.
