Amy Ryan to Topline Nicole Holofcener Comedy Series

Nicole Holofcener is coming to TV, and she’s taking Amy Ryan (“Birdman”) with her. The “Enough Said” helmer is looking for a straight-to-series order for a new half-hour, untitled comedy series.

Details are scarce at this point. What we know — besides Ryan’s casting — is that Holofcener will write and direct all of the episodes in the first season. The Hollywood Reporter suggests that the series will be “in the same vein of Holofcener’s films,” which include the beloved cult classic “Walking and Talking.”

Holofcener is working on the project with global media company Media Rights Capital (MRC). MRC will take the show to cable networks (HBO, Showtime, Starz) and streaming services (Hulu, Amazon, Netflix). All of these options seem like a better fit for Holofcener’s indie style than network TV.

The series won’t be Holofcener’s first foray into television, though it will mark the first time she has developed a show. She has many directing credits on the small screen, including “Orange is the New Black,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Six Feet Under.”

Ryan was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2007’s “Gone Baby Gone.” Her previous television credits include “The Office,” “In Treatment” and “The Wire.”
