Gwendoline Christie Joins Elisabeth Moss for Season 2 of Jane Campion’s ‘Top of the Lake’

The force is strong with “Game of Thrones” star Gwendoline Christie — and “Top of the Lake” fans. Hot off her big screen success with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Christie will join Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) for the second season of “Top of the Lake.” Moss’s performance in the first season of the feminist mystery series earned her a Golden Globe.

Jane Campion, who co-created the series, will once again direct. This season she’ll be joined by co-director Ariel Kleiman (“Partisan”). Campion is also taking on co-writing duties with her co-creator Gerard Lee (“Sweetie”).

“I am so delighted to be working on ‘Top of the Lake’ 2,” Christie said. “Jane Campion has been a major creative influence throughout my life and I could not feel more privileged to be working on the next installment of her unique and enthralling drama, alongside the brilliant Elisabeth Moss.”

Moss commented, “I’m so excited to be back in Australia working with Jane on exploring this wonderful character. I can’t wait for audiences to see where we take Robin’s journey!”

The second season takes place four years after the events of the first. Season 1 followed Sydney-based police detective Robin (Moss) returning to her hometown in New Zealand to investigate the disappearance of a local 12-year-old girl. Season 2 takes place in Sydney and centers around a murder.

The first season of “Top of the Lake” was nominated for eight Emmys, including Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, an acting nod for Moss, and writing and directing nominations for Campion and Lee. It won a trophy for Best Cinematography.

Unfortunately we’ll have to wait quite some time for Season 2, which premieres on BBC Two in the U.K in 2017 and later that year in the U.S. on SundanceTV. Episodes will be available to watch on Hulu the day after they premiere on SundanceTV.
