Great news for both theater nerds and period drama lovers: Los-Angeles based distributor Vision Films has acquired the worldwide rights for a film adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s play “Hedda Gabler.”
British actress Rita Ramnani (“The Hunt for Gollum”) stars as the titular character. The play — and presumably the film — begins with Hedda returning from her six-month-long honeymoon with her husband, an academic. It’s quickly apparent that the marriage, and life more generally, leaves much to be desired for Hedda. Bored and dissatisfied, she begins to act out in unexpected ways.
“’Hedda Gabler’ depicts a woman ahead of her time. This film brings the story many of us learned in English literature to life in a new way,” said Vision Films managing director and CEO Lise Romanoff.
The play was first published in 1890 and made its debut on the stage that same year.
