Channing Dungey made history yesterday by becoming the first African-Amerian head of a major broadcast network.

Dungey will take over managing ABC from diversity champion Paul Lee. She was previously executive VP of drama at the network, developing many of the its current hour-long hits, including “Scandal,” “Quantico,” “How to Get Away With Murder,” “American Crime” and “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD.” (Significantly, all those shows are major pillars in ABC’s recent tack toward diversity on screen.)

“Channing is a gifted leader and a proven magnet for top creative talent, with an impressive record of developing compelling, breakthrough programming that resonates with viewers,” said Ben Sherwood, president of Disney/ABC Television.

Dungey has been with the network since 2009 and its studio since 2004.
