Trailer Watch: A Young Woman is Accused of Witchcraft in Sundance Winner ‘The Witch’

“The Witch” has been terrifying audiences and earning glowing reviews on the festival circuit since it premiered last year at Sundance — and took home the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic Category at the fest. Now the third, and most likely final, trailer has been released for the period horror flick.

The visually striking film follows a Puritan family living in isolation on the edge of the wilderness. The trailer begins with a truly horrifying game of peekaboo: Newborn Samuel is giddily playing along with his oldest sibling, Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy, “Atlantis”), before he suddenly disappears without a trace.

The family begins to suspect Thomasin of foul play — specifically witchcraft. “There’s evil in the wood,” warns the father of the family, a preacher (Ralph Ineson, “Game of Thrones”).

Has Thomasin sacrificed her baby brother’s life for ungodly powers or is she being made into a scapegoat by her oppressively religious — and sexist — family?

Find out when the wonderfully atmospheric “The Witch” opens February 19.
