Kathryn Bigelow Announces Next Film: Drama About 1967 Detroit Riots

More than three years after the release of her last film (“Zero Dark Thirty”), Kathryn Bigelow has finally announced her next project.

The first and only woman filmmaker to ever win the Best Director Oscar has turned her sights toward Detroit. Based on an original screenplay by Mark Boal, who penned “The Hurt Locker” and “Zero Dark 30,” “Untitled Detroit Project” will focus on five summer days during the 1967 Detroit riots, one of the deadliest and costliest civil disturbances in the country’s history, with 43 dead and 2,000 buildings destroyed.

No studio is currently attached, but Bigelow and Boal intend to release the film in 2017, on the riots’ 50th anniversary.

The project will be financed by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna pictures, with principal photography starting this summer. Bigelow, Boal and Ellison will produce.
