Barbra Streisand’s First Directorial Project in 20 Years Will Be Catherine the Great Biopic

One of Hollywood’s most prominent women filmmakers is attached to direct a biopic about one of history’s most powerful women rulers.

Barbra Streisand has announced that she’ll helm a movie about Catherine the Great, who oversaw the expansion of Russia in influence and land mass during her rule from 1762 to 1796. It’ll be Streisand’s first movie since 1996’s “The Mirror Has Two Faces.”

The untitled project will be based on Kristina Lauren Anderson’s 2014 Black List script, which focuses on the Poland-born, German-descended princess’s abusive marriage to the Russian prince. After he proves himself a poor ruler, she takes over the throne after his assassination.

Streisand’s directorial credits also include 1983’s “Yentl,” 1991’s “Prince of Tides.” Her films have yielded 14 Oscar nominations.
