Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns promised that “The Hunger Games” franchise would “live on and on and on” in a company press conference on Tuesday.
The Jennifer Lawrence-led franchise showed some signs of audience fatigue in its most recent outing; “Mockingjay — Part 2's” opening-weekend box-office tally of “only” $102 million was significantly lower than those of previous installments. Burns brushed off the disappointing figure as a “high-class problem” to have and suggested we can expect more kiddie battles to the death in the prequels.
“The one thing that kids say they missed [from the early ‘Hunger Games’ films] was there were no arenas,” he said. “If we went backwards, there obviously would be arenas.”
Fingers crossed that Lionsgate sticks with something else that’s been working for the franchise: a kick-ass female protagonist.
