Two-time Tony winners Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole will team up on a new musical about a real-life rivalry.

LuPone and Ebersole will star in “War Paint,” which centers on the 50-year rivalry between cosmetics giants Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. The stage production will focus on each woman’s rise in the make-up industry in the first half of the 20th century. Both entrepreneurs came from humble backgrounds and remade themselves as commanding businesswomen who distinguished themselves in a male-dominated world.

With Pulitzer- and Tony-winning book writer Doug Wright (“I Am My Own Wife”), composer Scott Frankel, lyrics by Michael Korie and direction at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre by Michael Greif, this make-up musical is very much a male concoction. It should be noted, however, that its creative team did garner Ebersole her second Tony via their musical “Grey Gardens.”

The production is inspired by Lindy Woodhead’s book “War Paint” and by Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman’s documentary “The Powder & the Glory.”

Performances will start on June 28, 2016.
