Trailer Watch: Offred Is Back and Covered in Blood in “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2

“The Handmaid’s Tale”

It’s nearly time to welcome back everybody’s favorite dystopian drama. A teaser has dropped for Season 2 of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and the world of Gilead still feels disturbingly realistic.

The spot clocks in at over a minute but features no dialogue and few visual hints of what’s to come. We see Offred (Elisabeth Moss) covered in blood, but it’s unclear exactly whose blood it is. There’s also footage of a protest complete with a “Resist” sign, and the teaser is set to one of the world’s most famous protest songs, “For What It’s Worth (Stop, Hey What’s That Sound).”

Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, “The Handmaid’s Tale” is set in a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the U.S. Despite being published over three decades ago, many have remarked on the story’s timeliness: Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that strips women of their reproductive and economic rights, treating them like property of the state. Plunging birthrates have led to a new caste called Handmaids, the few women who remain fertile and are forced to carry children. The show’s protagonist, Offred, is one of these women.

The first season of the show concluded with a pregnant Offred being taken away from the family she serves in a black van. Meanwhile, her best friend Moira (Samira Wiley) successfully escaped Gilead and arrived safely in Canada, where she was reunited with Offred’s husband, Luke (O.T. Fagbenle).

Moss just won a Golden Globe for her role in the series. She dedicated her award to Atwood “and the women who came before [her] and after [her] who were brave enough to speak out against intolerance and injustice and to fight for equality and freedom in this world.” Moss previously won an Emmy for playing Offred/June. Reed Morano took home an Emmy for directing the pilot of the show, making her the first woman to win for drama series directing in 22 years.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” returns to Hulu April 25.
