Carrie Brownstein Is Adapting Her Memoir for Hulu

“Portlandia” co-creator and Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein is set to revisit her roots in the Pacific Northwest. The multi-hyphenate is adapting her best-selling memoir as a half-hour comedy pilot for Hulu, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Published in 2016, “Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl” chronicles her experiences as a young musician growing up in Washington. The Hulu project is titled “Search and Destroy” and will be “loosely based” on Brownstein’s book. Annapurna Television is producing.

“The pilot is about a young woman, a band, and a community learning how to be unafraid of their own noise,” THR writes. Brownstein was part of the influential riot grrrl movement in the ’90s.

At this time, the Peabody winner doesn’t have an on-screen role in the project, but she will write and direct the pilot.

Best known for writing, directing, and starring in sketch comedy series “Portlandia,” Brownstein’s other credits include directing eps of “Idiotsitter” and “Casual.” She had a recurring role in “Transparent.” In May 2017 Brownstein signed on to make her feature directorial debut with “Fairy Godmother,” a comedic revisionist take on the ubiquitous fairy tale character.

“Search and Destroy” is being exec produced Brownstein and Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Ali Krug.

“Portlandia’s” eighth and final season will premiere on IFC January 18.
